I now have a 10Gbe switch upstairs, and a 10Gbe switch downstairs, connected together with a 850mm fiber-optic SFP+ cable.
The next thing I need is a rack for my 2 servers and that upstairs switch. I’m looking for something very specific, 12U rack that’s around 30″ deep that isn’t stupidly expensive and looks nice. Almost every rack I’ve seen is like $500 bucks, and that’s just too much money. Racks and server rack rails are really expensive for some reason and not sure why.
At one point I contemplated just building my own rack out of wood, but using server rails. I dont want it to look jank, but I may be able to build what I want if I just built it myself. We’ll see.. the server rails are $12 bucks for 2 6U rails, so that may be the route I go.
